We've always lived in bigger houses than we've needed. We've probably lost out financially as we'd have made more profit buying something smaller, in an even better location, but the flexibility and extra space has been worth it every time.

I think it's a good idea to go for as big as you can as soon as you can, especially if you'd like kids at some point. BUT do consider issues around kids... what are schools like near the house? Is there childcare available in the neighbourhood etc. You don't want to buy it but then have to move because you wouldn't want your kids going to any of the available schools, for example.

I am curious how it's cheaper than a flat though?

It's not cheaper than a flat, but I could easily pay 2/3 of the price for a (still really nice) 2 bed flat that's a lot smaller.

We bought a 4-bed so we'd have room for our future planned kids, and then when the time came to have kids, we realised it wasn't the area in which we wanted to bring up kids (schools etc) :-( However, I don't regret it anyway simply because buying a more expensive house meant we benefited more from the increase in house prices, and that difference outweighed the greater costs.

We bought a larger home than we needed, it's just my husband and I but we bought a 3 bedroom house.

We have our main bedroom, a guest bedroom and a room for my hobby, 3 pet rats.
They can now have a much larger cage and also space to safely free roam when I'm there with them. I'm planning on getting suitable, easy clean flooring in their room too.

Even though our house it detached, it's not very big at all, but still a whole bedroom bigger than we realistically needed. However, I am glad we have the extra room now as it's come in very handy.

2 of us lived in a large 4 bed detached house for some years. With hindsight. I'd now spend the same money on something which fitted my requirements better, i.e. smaller, unique, quirky etc. As much of the space simply never got used.
