Ceiling/wall lights - advice please

We're DIY redecorating our hallway, stairwell, and landing. The new ceiling light for the hall was easy to get - and inexpensive - but we're having more problems with the light for the stairwell. The existing light is a wall light, which is fine and we don't want to change the wiring.

The problem is that I can't find any wall lights in the style I'd like. I've seen some that are sort of like what I want (three or four spots), but they're relatively a lot more expensive than a similar ceiling light would be.

Can I just put a ceiling light onto a wall? Most ceiling lights I've seen stick out more than wall lights, but this wouldn't matter in the open space in the stairwell. Basically, I just don't understand if the wiring or spec is different for walls rather than ceilings.

If anyone can throw any light (sorry!) on this, I'd be grateful.
