Cancelling Sky:choosing new

Hi
Looking for advice from anyone who has done this: Sky contract up in October, definitely elbowing them. I have the Q box, Box Sets, Line rental, Bband, phones and calls. I intend to move to Plusnet for FTTC Bband, line rental, phone and Anytime calls. I am a previous Plusnet customer and have checked out the package I want from them. I intend to buy a Humax 1100S Freesat box, fit the correct LNB in the Sky dish and watch programmes I want to watch again. Sky was an experiment I will not repeat!

I am disappointed in Sky service: the first complaint was when the engineer laid the cables through a wall, around 3 walls and 2 door frames, instead of through the loft. This happened while I was out and OH did not question it, as she thought that was right. The guy just came a day before his appointment as he "... was in the area."
There are many more complaints since, too many to mention. I will reroute the cables.

My question is: I can go Plusnet when I wish, but what is the best time to cancel Sky? The contract ends on October 26th. If anyone else has gone through the process, what is your advice please? All advice gratefully accepted, thanks to all. My Download is currently 10.6 Mbps: Plusnet have tested the line and offer at least 15, which is waht I initially had with Sky.
I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I would guess you need to tell sky you wish to leave their phone/BB on 26 Sept and they will action it 30 days later.

See if they will do you a deal, otherwise order plusnet.

Would be worth looking at EE also.

You may need to cancel sky TV separately.

It's worth asking Sky about a deal, then just tell Plusnet to take over for phone etc. They took 10 working days from order day to transfer my line, but Broadband was done over night as they count early morning as the day before. (Ordered on a Friday, line live on Friday two weeks later and bb was on by 10am on Saturday.)

You don't need to tell Sky about phone/line, except to ask for a deal, but tv needs 30/31 days to cancel.

I gave tv notice 31 days before end of minimum term date (sometimes they let you cancel more than 31 days before your minimum term end, but usually refuse, saying the system can't cope.).

For phone I ordered with just 12 days left, in case I was moved quickly so before the end of the minimum term, meaning a charge. It cost a couple of days at full price, but thought it would be cheaper than an early exit fine. (I will ask PlusNet about the fine, if I do move, as expected, as they are already more costly to leave because of their cease charge.)

AndyPK, thanks is that from your own experience? I have made up my mind to leave Sky and take Plusnet as ISP, based upon previous experience with them. I was fairly certain that 26 September was cutoff date, thanks for confirming that. I know that Sky will probably call me with "deals" when I go, well they should have shown the same interest in all the mistakes they made during my contract. 4 engineer visits in 2 weeks was ridiculous, aswas an order placed for FTTC and an original service as ADSL. The only good things to come out of Sky for me, were a new (shielded) line and 2x new BT sockets.

teddysmum thank you for that experience-based information, I remember the time Plusnet take to setup. Unfortunately I have a Sky router and Q box, which will need returning. As I say, there is no chance of me taking any Sky deals. I am going to speak with Plusnet about the fact that I have a very good TP-Link VDSL (FTTC) router, which is better than the Plusnet supplied one.

You don't need to talk to Plusnet about your router just don't order Plusnet's one when you place the BB order. An option you don't get with BT so they sting you £10 for the privilege of getting a box that will probably never get used.

I'm using my own TP-Link VDSL (FTTC) router which I started using with TT, then I moved to Plusnet and now BT. Only thing is Plusnet will offer little or no technical support as you are not using their router. Your user name and password will be on the Plusnet users website once your account gets set-up or goes live.

Thanks Inner Zone, that's good advice & information. Not too bothered about Plusnet support, I used the TP-Link VDSL router with them until I went to Sky. I can work with the router webpage settings and, even if I get stuck, I have a fantastic IT Help section in the person of my grandson, a network engineer. :)

I have only left Sky BB a bit over a year ago.

I don't think the router needs returning

No - thanks Andy, I forgot that, but as a wireless connection it is poor, fine as a Gigabit ethernet connection. Tablet, phones, TV connection occasionally drop out. My TP-Link 9980 is a VDSL router/modem, which works with FTTC and FTTH fibre:

This router/modem was superb and I know its settings inside-out.

I have 2 quotes on their way for a new LNB fit and install Sat cable through loft. Cancelling Sky on 25 September, ordering Plusnet same day.
