Experiences of pickford removals

Options
We've had a few quote from removals companies. Pickford came out about £200 more expensive, however have said they'll provide TV boxes, sofa covers, dismantle and reassemble furniture and have good insurance cover included in the price.

I just wondered if anyone had experience of them and whether they'd recommend them?

It's a 3 bed to 4 bed house move, 8 miles apart.

They're usually far pricier than other companies. I always use the same one when I move (a local-ish one rather than a big name). You prob won't go far wrong with Pickfords, but others can do it just as well :)

We've used Pickfords 3 or 4 times, including a couple of international moves and have always found their service excellent.

For our outbound international move they packed everything and took care of all the paperwork - no problems and not a thing damaged the other end.

On our return there were a few damaged items (not pickfords abroad, only once back in the UK). The guys unpacking were great - putting together bits of furniture etc. There were some bolts missing from a furniture item and one guy nipped off to B&Q to get a couple of bits to complete the job.

Having said all that, I suspect it may be luck of the draw as to the individual crews and you do have to stop and make tea awfully frequently!

I used them to put my stuff into storage, hold it for sometime, then deliver it at an unknown future date. That all went well; also, I only had one container (which is half a van full), so when I got my stuff back I chose the "half load" option - which is when they told me the date it was coming as they put it onto a van that had a spare slot.

My family members have always used them, including the packing service. Both used them "into storage, then out at a future date".

The only issue, unsubstantiated, was that my parents did think there were some small items missing when they unpacked... nothing big, but just a couple of smaller items of non-specific value, more "ornaments" than "valuables".

Pickfords is now run more or less as a francised business , they recruit existing removal companies , provide the companies with the jobs in the area they have quoted on and take a cut of the quote
Your best bet as always is recommendations , and have you seen their vehicles around , do they give a good impression
All Removal companies should have the material to protect your furniture etc and they should all be comprehensively insured ( although reading a removals fb page I am dismayed when there are company owners on there who seem to have no idea that they need specialist insurance and seem to think goods in transit insurance will do ! ).. So ask for details
Dismantling and reassembling furniture will always cost more

And on thw whole the cheapest quote , especially if it is much cheaper may be a cheap job

We've found a local firm with great reviews and half the price, so think we are going to go with them!

Pickford wouldn't reduce the price for not dismantling etc

When I had major repairs the insurance company used pickfords to pack my stuff up and store it. They packed everything straight into a container that was sealed in situ. Superb service, no way anything could get lost/stolen. i was impressed and I don't impress easily.
  • I'm getting a quote from Pickfords next weekend. The reason being although I would like to give a local firm my business they only have a handful of vans and I like to assume Pickfords will have more availability when I get my completion date.
