We recently sold our home and the new buyer raised 2 claims on the missives (we're in Scotland). The issues are now resolved with the total being a touch under £500. My understanding was we were liable to pay the lot as it was over £300 but I've been advised the new owner pays the first £300 and we pay above that. Which is correct?

You'll need to tell us what the relevant clauses in your missives say. But I would suggest that you believe what your solicitor has advised you.0

I'm waiting to hear back from my solicitor. It was them who advised the first £300 is the liability of the purchaser but I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick.0
