Claiming jsa

Hi,

I need some information please

I've been made redundant recently and would like to apply for jsa. When I checked whether I'm eligible using those online checker sites, it asked for personal savings. Does isa and my redundancy pay out count as personal savings? What is the cap for personal savings to make me eligible for jsa?

After you get jsa, I heard that you need to report weekly to the job centre to show you're really actively looking for work. Is this true?

Many thanks in advance.

San

You do have to go frequently to the Job Centre, although the interview that you have to conduct is farcical, as far as I remember.

If you have sufficient NI contributions then you would be eligible for contributory JSA for six months. This is payable irrespective of savings and other household income

    Thanks for the replies.

How do I know if I've made enough NI contributions? I guess the only way to find out is to go to the job centre?

    Thanks

You sound like you will be a single claimant? As in you will not claim for help with your kids / partner?

In that case the Jobcentre will likely sign you up to Universal Credit.

You can find out more about Universal Credit online but in a nutshell JSA is being replaced by Universal Credit.

You must have less than £6000 in savings to access Universal Credit, so in the event that you have more than £6000, it would be worthwhile going for Contributions based JSA or 'New Style' JSA. These types of JSA will be around for a little while longer.

As for the frequency of your reporting to the Jobcentre. Your work coach will come to an agreement with you. We can't tell you what your agreement is going to look like!

It is important that you go into the Jobcentre with some knowledge in your hands. Sometimes their staff are not as knowledgeable as you would expect them to be!

Only income based JSA is being replaced by UC.
    Contributions based JSA continues.

If the OPs NI record over the tax years 2014-15 and 2015-16 is sufficent to qualify them for contributions based JSA, then this is what they will get.

    Good Morning,

I've checked my NI contributions and according to the site, I've made full year contributions every year for last 10 years.

I'm claiming jsa for myself but I have got a partner and an 8 year old boy. When I check the gov site it advised me that I should be entitled to income based jsa. I've filled the jsa app form online and I guess it will be decided when I've got the interview with the job centre?

Does your partner work over 24 hours per week, if so there will be no income based JSA payment. If they do not work then what sort of JSA do they claim? (also savings; ISA, redundancy payment, other savings could cancel out payments)
Best result would be for contribution based JSA which would ignore partners income and any savings
