My desktop pc has been acting a bit weird for a while and has now died. It was left running yesterday afternoon, but when I went to go on it later, the on screen message said to check connections. The blue power light was on & I think a fan was running. (am hard of hearing, but could feel slight vibration by touching the tower and air coming from the vents.)
For a while its run slow at times and hung whichever browser I've used (Internet Explorer or Firefox). My technical knowledge is limited to running things like anti-virus scans and using on board tools such as disc clean up and defragment. 2-3 weeks ago, malaware bytes found 2 things - can't remember exactly what they were called, but took around 3 attempts to get rid of them (possibly something like root kits?).
This morning I started doing the obvious in trying a different hdmi cable that I know works, but made no difference to on the screen message. My pc is now completely kaput, with no power whatsoever. It went off suddenly and no amount of holding the on button in does anything.
I thought it could be the graphics card that the hdmi cable was plugged into and was about to try a different slot with the old style connector that screws in (sorry, can't remember what it's called) - obviously can't do that now!
I'm stumped and would greatly appreciate any help or advice with this please. (Am having to borrow another pc so may be slow to respond.) I'm guessing it's more likely to be the motherboard now as it did power up for a time?
(Not sure if this holds further clues, but I've also been having issues with my printer. It works to a point, but I've also had similar onscreen messages saying it isn't connected.)

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.
What happens when you tap F8 on bootup? Does it give any options?0 -
If you are still running the Gateway GT 5056b, put it out to pasture.
You can get a replacement machine for around £50 and re-use parts of the old machine if necessary, such as Graphics card, tuner etc0 -
Sorry for the longer than expected replies.
WAYT - Your comment made me chuckle - though in reality, am not sure whether to laugh or cry as it's the newer custom build pc that's died and I'm having to borrow back the old Gateway 5056b to use instead for now!
Over the last few days, this is what I've done:
Dusted inside (using an air blower) and tried known working cables and different monitor. All components are in the relevant slots/holders and there's no sign of damage or loose bits to any of them, including the motherboard.
It powers up and all 3 fans are working, but other than that, nothing else happens. The pc is just short of 4 years old, with a dedicated graphics card that the screen was plugged into. (I've also tried it (and the other monitor) with vga connection to the slot on the motherboard, but still nothing beyond the fans and power up lights.
I don't know what else to do or check so any advice, again, is welcome please. These are the specs if it's any help.

Motherboard: 4190 - NEW! Gigabyte H81M-S2PV
Have you tried the "hold power button" trick?
1.Connect to mains
2. switch off at mains (or power supply if it has an on/off switch)
3. hold power buttom firmly in and counto to 20secs
4. switch on. any change? any beeps?
You say 3 fans are running. What about the CPU fan?
EDIT: is your motherboard connected to chassis speaker (unlikely these days as I don't think cases come with a speaker?); if it is then "One single short beep will be heard if no problem is detected at system startup."
EDIT2: find the latest BIOS for your motherboard/revision; copy to ROOT of a usb stick; stick that in your computer and boot it; if its working at all it may upgrade the BIOS automatically from USB.If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
Physically take out the graphics card and try with just the vga cable to the on board graphics.
(Dont froget to tell your monitor to expect an input from a different source)

Thanks all. Will have a go at these and let you know.
Grumpycrab - Sorry for the confusion about the motherboard being highlighted. I copied this from the original order when the pc was made.0
