How are Kenley and Coulsdon areas? (Croydon)

Are they safe enough for my 12yr old DD to walk back from school on her own?

I know Croydon has a reputation so we never considered this area before. We drove through yesterday and found the area (Kenley) rather nice and leafy.

Kenley used to be ok, but, like every area in the land, it has some probkens now.
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

Can you suggest some nice areas in Surrey please? We need academic schools, under an hour to London.

Coulsdon and Kenley are fine. The further you go out the more leafy it is.

Your child shouldn't have any issues in these areas. Anywhere from South Croydon out to Coulsdon is pretty nice

I wouldn't write off the whole of Croydon! Some areas are lovely, some seem terrible (but consider whether you have any unfair biases making you feel that way). You could also consider Sutton - good transport to central London and lots of really good schools.

I lived in Coulsdon over 40 years ago and it was so tranquil (with good train services), I'm shocked with the question but obviously places and people change over such a timescale. Spent some time in Croydon during that time and that was a different kettle of fish even then.

    I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend.

We drove through the area and thought it was lovely. I posted here to see if there is anything I am missing. We avoided Croydon postcodes until now (for obvious reasons) because we never knew there were lovely areas around there.

Other options could be Sutton, Cheam, Wallington, Epsom. A lot of the schools in the area are single sex, there's loads of grammars if that's a possibility for your daughter.

    Schools...

Nonsuch, Rosebery, Wallington Girls, St Philomena's, Sutton High (private) off the top of my head. Mostly trying to remember the schools we played netball against! :D But it's a very competitive pocket of the country in terms of schools, lots of great ones around the areas. My Croydon knowledge is a bit more lacking.

I travel to Croydon regularly. There are areas I wouldn't want to live in, but none where I feel unsafe (unless trying to cross Purley Way, which is a pedestrian's nightmare).
