Tiling inside chimney breast

Hi all, after some advice with the tiling (preparation) of my chimney breast.

Damp had started to come the new plasterboard (renovated last year)

I have removed this plaster board back to the brick work but what I am wanting to do is tile it all instead, I was going to put a membrane sheet over the old brick work to stop the salts and things coming through and then fix some timbers so then I can fit a new board of some sort.

My brother thinks I should concrete render instead but Im not sure how to go about doing this, can some one point me in the best direction of what is going to be better for the building.

Please see attatched pictures of what the chimney was like before I took the plaster off and what its like now (back to brick)

Hope this makes sense and hope we can shed some light on this, thanks a lot, Micky.

The damp is obviously coming from somewhere so I would try to fix that first. Is there a cap on the chimney pot? Also there should be a ventilation gap into the chimney from the fireplace.

from the looks of things in the photo it seems that the dampness is coming from the top. Personally, I would be investigating whether it has been capped properly from the top or not first, and whether that is still in place
