Taxing Issue

I've recently bought a car and i'm unable to tax it. I have the V5C/2 (Green slip) and i've tried taxing it online but it comes up saying i've already taxed it? When I bought the car (privately) the seller had very recently taxed it under himself. When I do a tax check on the car it comes up saying it isn't taxed, however when trying to actually tax it, it comes up saying it is taxed? He did fill in the document on the gov website to say he is no longer the owner as well. I'm completely lost in the situation as the post offices are closed, bank holiday monday, and I've already left it untaxed for a whole day. Is there any solutions to this and am I okay to leave it untaxed any longer?

How long have they had it? The V5C/2 could be from the previous to him owner and he taxed it on that, did you see the owner on the V5?
  • The owner the car has had it since it was made in 2009 and he taxed it the day before selling it which I think is what is causing the issue. The DVLA says the car is not taxed and the gov website won't let me tax, it says this

    "Successful application already completed
This vehicle has been taxed or notified as off the road within the last 5 days."

    He didn't SORN it either.
  • After phoning the DVLA it appears there might be a transaction in process, probably the one he did the day before selling the car.

Is it okay to leave the car "untaxed" for now until?

I had similar after cancelling auto renewal. I phoned and was told to wait a few days, possibly a week, to wait for the system to catch up. Didn't you ask the dvla what to do?

A friend often taxes her car about two weeks late without penalty. I think as the tax is backdated to the start of the month it is being paid in full although a bit late so the dvla aren't worried about it.

Not much help to you now, but you should have asked DVLA while you were on the phone;)

Go to the above website and if that tells you it's taxed then you will be fine whilst it is being sorted out.

I've had similar when changing cars between myself and my wife - SORN on last day of the month, change owner, then tax on first day of the next month to avoid the double payment.

It seems that the online tax system won't allow a transaction (SORN or tax) for 5 working days after the last one. Both times this has happened I've just used it for the week and taxed as soon as it'll allow. I've had no issues over it.

Nocho and Norman, really interested to see you were actually able to phone the dvla?! I've been trying to ring them and the number they give is no longer in use. Tried the 4321 number and told to ring the 6808 but that says not in use. Any other number? I've also had issues with the online taxing system. I have an eco car which is fee-free, and I taxed it online in July ready for August deadline, then received a reminder in August so went online again but it said it was already taxed. Then I was away for 5 weeks, just got back to find a penalty notice for not taxing. No help from the online help system so I have returned the penalty notice with details disputing it. However, I have only just noticed that I didn't receive an email confirmation of tax which I normally do, (yes, should have checked immediately!) so have no proof that I did it. Guess I don't have much hope of getting out of it, but am annoyed that I am going to have to pay £80 for their system mistakes!

It sounds like there's been some confusion around the close timescales - it happens.

Just try retaxing it daily until it works. So long as you manage before Wednesday, you'll be covered for October.
