Help with Nationwide please?

Hello,

A few days ago i called nationwide and reported fraud/suspicious transactions on my account.
They put me through to the "specialist crime unit" and they "restricted" my account with immediate notice following complete closure in 14 days time.

They also denied my fraud case, and said they didn't wish to have me as a customer anymore (I've been a victim of ID theft/fraud in the past)

Now, I have some money in my account £400+.
All of which is money from my local council to pay to a third party (my landlord) for rent!

They say i must travel 20 miles to my "local" branch with ID to withdraw any funds, even though the day she closed my account she allowed for me to make one final transfer and then "restricted the account"

As far as i am aware banks are not lawfully permitted to withhold funds from a government agency i.e state benefits, or money that is intended for a 3rd party i.e my landlord for rent.

I suffer with heart failure and nerve damage and multiple other illnesses and disabilities and it would be VERY difficult and unsafe for me to travel from my remote/rural location via public transport to the bank, bare in mind i have NO money as they are holding it ALL in my account!

Could someone advise me here? I am not sure what to do ?

What have you been up to to make them suspend your account?
  • I made a fraud claim with them, due to un-authorised transactions on my account and they said because of my account "age" being relatively new, i posed a high risk.

If you really want help and advice, you must post more details.
However, if they don't want you as a customer, there's very little (I.e. nothing) you can do. As for them holding on to your money while they investigate fraud..well.....same again really. The usual advice on here is to ring up and explain your circumstances in the nicest possible way and hope they see it from your point of view.
Have you thought about where next months rent is going to be paid to?
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
  • Yes,

My money will be going into my post office cash account the DWP setup and my rent will be going into my fiancee's bank account.

They legally have no right to hold onto 3rd party money or money meant for myself from the government as they are not involved in "fraud"

Could you post a link to the relevant legislation?

They aren't holding on to it. They asked you to go to a branch with ID to get the funds.... Or ask them to send out a cheque with the balance, I'm sure they can do that. But pointless since you don't have another bank account.

What type of transaction was fraudulent... What was the merchant, POS or Online, Was verified by visa passed...

Because when you pass through a verified by visa site it logs the IP address and location etc, And the bank can compare this to any logins used to access online banking. They would also check the address the merchant used to authorise and cookies also help.

If it's genuine fraud then normally get a police reference so it's logged with the police. But Nationwide do have a history of saying they don't want to do business with customers and close their accounts, Which they are entitled to do.

As you appear to be saying that it is impossible for you to travel anywhere I assume that you have assigned power of attorney to someone who can do the travelling on your behalf, so get them to take your ID into the branch.

If you haven't done this then perhaps now is the time to think seriously about doing it.

If you have these issues travelling, why did you choose Nationwide?

Anyway, can't you borrow money from fiancee/family/friends to get to the Nationwide branch to sort this out. Keep the receipt and ask Nationwide to reimburse you.

Have you opened another current account yet?
