Structural Engineer Costs

I have asked a builder for a quote to convert our front garden into a parking space. This will require a lot of digging as our front door is some 17 steps up from the street, and the space will be approx 6x6 m when finished. Quite rightly he requested we get a structural engineer in calculate the amount of concrete needed to make sure we don't upset the foundations of the house. The engineer has quoted £960 (inc. VAT) just for the calculations. Which I think is quite a lot for what I would have thought to be 1-2 days worth of calculations. Our house is a modest single front terrace. Anybody got any thoughts on how much this should cost?

Seems about right to me. I had a £250 plus vat bill for a beam calculation.63 mortgage payments to go.
