I am trying to discover whether Windows MovieMaker will operate on Windows 10 /64 ...
I understand that MS are going to offer a superior version called "Story Remix" in the autumn update - but I need it now - is there any safe repository where the original can still be obtained ?

I will not use that site - it is a known unsafe source and in any case - is that a genuine MS download ?0 -
One original download link to the Windows Live installer was:
http://g.live.com/1rewlive5-all/en/wlsetup-all.exe
But it has been removed by Microsoft sometime earlier this year.
However you could used something like the 'Wayback Machine' to go back and get a copy of that file from before then. This is from 5 January 2017:

Movie Maker certainly works with Windows 10. I saw some people did report some errors when installing, but also reported that if they ignored the errors, it continued to work OK.
Of course it's out of support and I've an idea that Windows Live includes components which may have some risk attached - something like an old SQL Server version component, although I might be wrong on that.0 -
Or you could use another good free editor like VSDC Free Video Editor http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor0

SQL Server 2005 is out of support, and as server products are perhaps more complex beasts with more vulnerabilities than most software (although I admit I'm not sure if the Compact edition is quite so vulnerable), I'm guessing this is why Microsoft have been deliberately removing the Live Essentials installer from their sites.0 -
So is it possible to install movie maker on Win 10 / 64 ?0
