Amazon Fire HD8 poor battery life

I bought my Mum a Amazon Fire HD8 tablet a couple of weeks ago. However, the battery life seems very short. Even if it's in "standby" mode it barely lasts a day. Yesterday I took it off charge (showing 100%) at about 3pm. I'd used it to watch a film for about an hour then left it overnight. This morning the battery was showing only 8%. Is this normal? It seems very short to me compared to my IPad mini.
