I am going to upgrade from Microsoft Office 2007 to 2016 this weekend and would be grateful if you could give me any tips / do's and don'ts.

For instance, will all my emails in Outlook 2007 be retained once I upgrade?
Should I uninstall Office 2007 before installing 2016?

Is there anything I should make sure I do beforehand apart from backing up crucial files.

Thanks for any help.

You should be backing up anyway.

Make sure you have the server settings and the PST files for your Outlook backed up before you upgrade. While most PST files are backwards compatible anyway, better safe than sorry.

Publisher, if you still use it, is NOT backwards compatible, so once you save something in Publisher 2016 no previous version of Publisher will be able to read it.

The upgrade will typically remove your Office 2007 - you may be able to have them side by side but as they work in near enough the same way - the ribbon's still there, the colours are different but that's cosmetic and the entire operation runs under your MS account. Apart from that it's still the programs you know and love.

I found the transition pretty seamless but I did keep an old install of 2007 on one of my laptops.

However, when I went to install 2016, keeping the previous version meant I was limited to only installing the 32-bit of 2016, which is a bit slower/more clunky at some things compared to the 64-bit

    Why's that?

Definitely back up your emails to pst & I would also backup your pc with something like veeam endpoint backup free or clonezilla if you have an ext hard drive handy.

Only use the 32 bit version as ms don't recommend using 64 bit as there have been lot's of issues with it.

    Hope it all goes ok.
