How much can I expect to pay for a new kitchen?

Hi,

I've recently bought a house and the kitchen is incredibly old - paint peeling off cupboards, integrated everything and now a broken oven element.

I wondered if anyone might be able to advise on how much I'd be looking to pay for a new kitchen, including appliances - oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher, stove, etc. It's a small galley-style kitchen, if that helps.

I really have no idea what region I'll be looking in - except that it'll be well into the 1000s - so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

    Give or take.
  • We have recently done ours from IKEA, self employed fitter and cost us £8800. Our kitchen is pretty large though. Would be difficult for anyone to comment on how much for yours as really depends on finish, gadgets, whether any decoration required etc.
  • Depends what you buy, how big your kitchen is, what sort of appliances you want, how much donkey work you're prepared to do yourself (gutting the old, flooring, installation, painting, painting, plumbing, tiling) etc etc.

You can spend a few thousands or a few tens of thousands. It's a "how long is a piece of string" question.

Ours, 12x12 roughly, plus a dining section the same size. Appliances, units, a fitted bulkhead above all units, new lights, some plumbing and a new wiring loop, and new floor. Full room skimmed and painted, fully finished £12k all in. Used diykitchens and a local joiner.

£20k was pretty much exactly what my colleague paid, so spot on in their case.

We got a Homebase kitchen a few years ago, and I planned it using a very simple tape measure and graph paper.
We have a 15' x 12' kitchen, and for less than £10K we had a kitchen fitter do the worktops (do not try to do this yourself because it is skilled work) and fit the units. I built the units, and prepared the floor (Cleared old units, put down 18mm ply, because we were tiling the floor). An electrician also fitted extra sockets, but he was crap. Included in that price was - dishwasher, hob, oven, extractor.
The price also included marble tiles for the floor and mosaic marble tiles for the splashbacks, as well as all paint and decorating materials.
I also forgot to mention the Carron sink, drainer and gooseneck taps - nice finishing touch.

    What £20k... OMG!!!!!!!

Think I paid £3k about 10 years ago through MFI (probably says it all, but hey its still standing!).

I'd say get a few quotes.

Why do you say that? How big is the kitchen? What needs doing? You've seen OP's kitchen and exact requirements presumably?

I made up a number. The "give or take" was the clue. How long is a piece of string? 20m, give or take. OP's kitchen might cost £20k, it might cost £30k, it might cost £5k. The point is, none of our guesses are informed.

In future, it's probably just easier for OPs like this one to tell us what price he wants us to suggest it will be.
  • In case OP hasn't got the point yet, there's just far too many variables.

You could spend up to £5k on a small cheap kitchen doing as much work yourself as possible, you could spend £50-100k on a large handmade kitchen with top of the range appliances.

You'll get more helpful answers if you provide more information: how big is your kitchen, what level of fit and finish are you after, would you be happy with something from IKEA or are you looking for something higher end, do you want integrated appliances and how much are you willing to spend on them, can you do any work yourself, will you need any plastering/tiling/electrical work, how much plumbing work will there be (do you want to move anything?) etc.

Perhaps a simpler question to ask would be: why can you afford to (or are willing to) spend on a new kitchen? Assuming your budget is realistic for the size of your space, work back from there.
