I'm intending to change the oil and filter on my 184CR tomorrow, VW recommends 5W30, however I'm looking at Mobil one 0W40. Its compliant with VW 505 00 though a slightly diffferent viscosity.

Will this be suitable?

Yes, if it matches the VW standard your car requires.

    Made a mistook.

    Engine requires 507 00.

Edit: picked up Castrol Edge LL 15668E

Next time try your local TPS. When it's on special offer, their LongLife Quantum III which is 504/507 spec is £17.50 for a 5 litre bottle. Same stuff as the main dealers use.

    Job done.

Next will be a timing belt kit and water pump.

  • If you change the oil regularly (and I would on that engine) see if a friend has a Costco card - oil is quite cheap to pick up in there.

Both my cars run on 5w30, so I got a 25L drum of it :)

I got the Castrol Edge in Costco.

Neither of the bulk Chevron lubes are rated to 507 00, which the engine DPF requires.

My car takes VW505.01 oil. I pay about £25 for 5 litres and change it every 8000 miles. A friend who works in a motor factors brought me some VW507.00 oil for £40 and said it would last ages. A bit of googling later he took it back and I used my usual oil. More frequent oil changes with the cheaper (but still to spec) oil for me.

May be detrimental to the DPF due to low sulphated ash requirement. Its not the service life of the lubricant that's the issue.

  • Ah, a shame the Chevron doesn't meet the spec.
My 'fleet' is a Mazda 3 MPS and a diesel MG ZT, so no need for low ash etc. :)
