Debit card fees? Car Giant

Hi,

Hopefully quick and simple.

Can they impose their 0.02% fee for using a debit card? I don't mind paying it if it's legal but I thought all fees had been banned?

They can currently charge what it costs them to process the transaction but can't make a profit. On the face of it, 0.02% doesn't seem unreasonable.

From next year they won't be able to charge you extra.

It's a 0.2% surcharge not 0.02%

Having just read the info in the link above I cannot see any way that you can pay them without incurring additional charges.

Although it's 'car giant' so I don't know why I'm surprised.

Debit card transactions are fixed unlike credit cards. It costs between 15 and 30p to process a debit card depending on the retailers volume.
I've never known anyone to charge a percentage on a debit card as it pretty much negligible.
(excluding mobile based systems)

Visa debit interchange is no longer fixed, however. From the 1st March 2015, the charge is now a combination of a percentage of the transaction value (0.2%) plus a fixed cost of 1p or 11p depending on whether the transaction was “secure” or not.
