Slate paint??

Hi guys,

I have just spent the day cleaing the slates on the bay window of my living room as they were coveredin bird "stuff" paint drips etc. I now want to paint them as they are a very light grey. I have been to B&Q and they only have red tile paint for this job. Can anyone recommend any dark grey slate/tile paint?

    Oooh, why paint them?

I spilled some oil on our slate fire surround a while back and it has stained it a darker slate colour - would that be any good?

We put a matt clear sealer on a slate floor and that made it a lot darker.

The reason for painting them is that I have just done the paintwork on the outside of the house and it all looks nice and fresh apart from the slates that look pale and a bit wishy washy......

Oil - any type will do. Paint it on, let it soak in and wipe off the excess with a cloth.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys but Im confused now by the ProLandlords comment about it being a bad idea......

If it is a bad idea then why do manufacturers make slate tile paint?
  • we have a slate fireplace, and use wd40 to bring it up. It works very well.

I have never painted slate, but I have slate/basalt paving in my garden. You can only see the "real colour" in it when it is wet...when it is dry it just looks grey and dusty.

I used this http://www.leafcutterdesign.co.uk/lithofin-slateseal-p-99.html and now the colours inthe slate show all the time.

It says not to use outdoors, but I have 3 coats on and it has been fine for a couple of years now.....
