Thanks. Will certainly look into finding an Independent Damp Surveyor. My only concern was if they tried to push a particular treatment that was costly and unnecessary.

That's the point of independents - they don't push treatments as they don't do them themselves. We got a written report that we passed on to our builder - he was able to take care of stuff we needed doing.

I'm not at home at the mo, but will see if OH can find the report (he may not be able to as he doesn't keep paperwork very organised! :o ) when go home. Can then at least tell you the kind of stuff it covered.

Just as a matter of interest, do you have solid floors (concrete) or wooden floorboards? The damp in the wall between our kitchen and living room came from the concrete sickness - I suspect there'd been a leak in kitchen, maybe from washing machine, and that that reacted with the concrete floor which then broke down whatever DPC that was there. It's about 7 years ago now, so can't remember what report said. :o

Best wishes and good luck! :)
  • We have concrete floors. I will look further into it. So far the only ones I can find are 'damp proof specialists' who undoubtedly will push dpc.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

This is a random sample of stuff about concrete sickness. Also known as sulphate (sulfate in USA) sickness. It describes it a bit.

Never mind "damp proof specialists", you need "independent damp surveyor (where you live)".

Good luck - I'm sure there'll be an independent surveyor relatively near to where you live.
