BMW 1 series 2010 timing chain RECALL

Hi, everyone
I'm very new to this forum and i was wondering if anyone could help me out on this matter
I purchased my BMW 118 2010 diesel just over a year ago.
I've just got back from giving the car a major service and they've told me that there is a slight noise coming from my timing chain.
I contacted another mechanic i know and he said that there had been a recall on this specific engine for this particular problem (N47 engine) And that if he was to fix it it would cost £2-3000 as the crankshaft and some other bits would need replacing as well.
So, i called BMW and they told me that there was a recall on this specific issue but it got phased out a few years ago because there wasn't enough people coming in for the repair.
I've seen an article from BBC watchdog where they've spoke to several people being in the car whilst the timing chain has snapped causing catastrophic engine failure and loss of all brakes and steering.
Surely BMW have some duty of care on this as i'm now afraid to drive the car as i do a lot of motorway miles!
Any help where i stand with this would be fantastic (my rights etc)
Thanks alot, Lewis

This seems to cover it - suggest a discussion with your local dealer or direct with BMW (assuming your car is one of the ones affected)

Thanks for the quick reply!
So, this folder clearly states that BMW are aware of the fault in this particular engine. But am i entitled to the repair even though they tell me that the repair has been phased out.
It would be interesting if anyone else has been in this same problem.0 -

Its a very well known problem on these engines. You should get yourself on to a specialist forum instead of a general motoring forum like this one. Try https://www.babybmw.net.0 -

If the car has not been continually serviced with the book stamped etc at BMW from day one i can see you will have a issue. Cant see BMW saying not enough people came in for the recall, more like most of them let go and we charged them £8k to put a new engine in it.0

The brakes will become heavier, after the first application or two, when vac assistance to the servo is exhausted.
The steering will become heavier if it's hydraulic power-assisted, and may still be normal if it's electric.
Both will still work just fine, but may require more effort.LewisRedding wrote: »But am i entitled to the repair even though they tell me that the repair has been phased out.0 -
Over-sensationalised rubbish. Engine failure won't cause loss of all brakes and steering.

!
Kids today don't know what real steering and brakes are0 -
The bulk of the problem - IMHO - is that these engines use an amount of oil AND they're all on long life service schedules.
A lot of people will skip on services anyway, and only 1% will ever check the oil. By the time the "oil light" comes on, the damage may already be done.
Also oil @ 18,000 to 20,000 interval is in a very sorry state.
My son bought a 2009 120d M Sport 4 years ago. It had 51,000 miles on it and a full BMW SH. We got it serviced "on schedule" with BMW every 18,000 miles or whenever it popped up. And we got another oil and filter change done by a small indie every 9,000 miles.
Also we checked the car every week for oil and kept it topped up.
We ran it to 80 odd thousand with no problems.0
