Advanced notice of resignation

Options
OK so I started a job 2 months ago after being made redundant. I took the job due to my desperate situation. The contract states the first 6 months is a probation with a 1 week notice period. Also during this time they don't need to follow the disciplinary procedure. The job hasn't been to my liking.

Last week I was offered a much better job elsewhere (I applied for this during my redundancy) - basically my dream job. My start date is Oct. Basically 6 weeks from now.

I'd rather tell my current employer now what's going on. 5 weeks advance notice of my resignation. As they are planning training sessions later in the year, and some business travel. It might help them with future planning and smoother transition finding a replacement.

Could they turn around at any point during those 5 weeks and tell me to leave after 1 week?

Yes, I'm afraid they could. Hopefully a decent employer wouldn't, particularly as you are going our of your way to save them wasting resources, but you do run the risk if you give more notice than they have to give you.

Thanks for the quick reply. So I'm best waiting until 1 week before? I can't afford to be out of work that long.

It would be safest. Technically, notice starts the day after it is issued.

I might give two weeks notice as a courtesy, but not 6 weeks, that's more than most have to give after years

Agreed! Just a shame they are wanting to book me on training courses I know I won't be attending.

Assuming you wont be expected to pay for them if you leave (check), that's their problem.

Fair point they are paying. Just seems a waste of money!

If you tell them now it's highly likely that they will get you to leave after 1 week, or now with 1 weeks pay in lieu of notice. They won't want to waste time and effort training you even in-house. If they try to book external training between now and when you need to hand in your notice, just be certain that there is nothing in your contract to say that you have to repay training costs.
