Question about fitting a garden gate

I have a traditional wooden cottage garden gate which needs replacing and fancy an arched wooden gate. The existing gate is 38 inches wide x 50 inches high. The new one would much taller - around 55 inches vertical with a semicircular arch. So the top of the arch would be 55+19 = 74inches (or maybe 2 inches less to comply with planning ;)).
One joiner said he could use the existing fittings. But a second joiner said no - they would be too low for the new gate which would be top heavy. Is he right?
The current gate attaches onto the original solid iron fixings embedded in a big piece of rough hewn stone - the top one being 38 inches from the ground.
I was wanting to use the existing arrangement to preserve the character. Plus I don't want to get into fitting fence posts etc. In fact I would rather choose a smaller gate.
So is the second joiner right?
