Receiving post in France by Poste Restante

Many moons ago I was able to address my mail to any main post office (Post restante) in France and pick it up free of charge showing ID
I don't mind if there is a small fee but I need to know if this is still possible.
I would call them but all post offices in France use an 08 number which is equivalent to our 0870 and so I cant call from UK
Could anyone advise?

Ah yes, those were the days, when the only way for travelers to stay in touch was by mail.

"Write to me at Poste Restante, Bombay, I'll be there in a few weeks."

An occasional trip to the main post office, often the the box of letters is dumped on the counter to sort through yourself, many of them tattered from being there so long, the thrill of finding one addressed to you..!

You could rely on it in every city, can't be much use for it now but no reason why it shouldn't still exist - perhaps with a few unclaimed from fifty years ago...

Well believe t or not snail mail still has its uses
I need the legally required Clean air certificate for driving in some French cities. It says to allow 10 days for it to arrive in UK by post so it must be quicker for it to be sent to a French address
That's why I need Poste Restante
It's no good me sending it Poste Restante if it won't be there when I get there
That's why I have to be sure the service is still available
