    I love that sketch. Brilliant.
  • I think a big lesson we can take from some of the blethering is that having a pension over and above the state pension is a good idea. If we want to take this to the I'm poorer than you limits I have to say I grew up in an area where we viewed council estates as posh, they had bathrooms and gardens, no shared loo at the top of the yard.

I don't think I did anything very special but although I am still waiting for my SRP, just a few months to go, I have my own pension and share of my husband's and I can save £2k a month. I worked it out the other day and was quite staggered. I thought I would do a SOA and couldn't quite believe it, I don't actually save it as I am generous to my children and grandchildren but it is there and no one can touch it, when my husband became seriously ill they couldn't take it away from me the way they could with savings so I am happy with the decisions I made.

I hope the OP is OK, it is horrible to worry about money but she will probably find that the money will stretch, as people have said your outgoings do drop when you retire, although I am looking at gym prices for my resolution to get fit and they seem very expensive.

PP. gym prices vary considerably.....depends what features you want.

You can go From pretty basic city centre gyms without pools or classes from around £10 a month to all singing/all dancing spa type gyms which will cost you an arm and a leg.

I have joined DW Sports. They are nationwide. Off peak comes In at £27 per month, to include use of all equipment, swimming pool, jacquzzi, sauna and lots of classes. Nice premises.

I thought that was pretty good. Some of the ones I looked at were three times that. I thought David Lloyd and Nuffield Health were really expensive and the facilities were no "posher" than DW Sports.
  • Local leisure centre is £40 a month, everything else is more as they are based in hotels but to be honest they don't look that great for the money. I live in a smallish town so no city facilities and no real competition. I can't decide what to do, I think I am too tight to commit to £40 a month for a year.

Have you got a bit of space you can convert into a mini gym. We did this in our old house. No swimming pool of course (unfortunately):rotfl: but it was very convenient to have our own "in house" gym.

We picked up most of the equipment 2nd hand so it didn't cost much.
  • I could do it at home, I just liked the idea of going somewhere and having a commitment. We do have a free open air gym at a local beach, maybe I should try that. Walking there would help, walking back, up a steep hill, would be even better. Maybe I should just get out and walk more.
  • A friend has told me to wait until next month as apparently some of the hotels do special offers when the season ends. I had a spa day at a 4 star hotel and she reckons they do some good offers, it is beautiful and from the pool and jacuzzi you have fantastic seaviews. I wouldn't mind going there. It is worth thinking about. My birthday is coming up so my membership could be a present to me from me.

    Sounds like a plan......:rotfl:
  • Actually I just realised next month is Friday so not long to wait. It would feel quite luxurious at this hotel, lying on the loungers by the pool looking out at the view, mind you it won't get me fit. I would have to have the jacuzzi and loungers as a treat if I work hard. Unfortunately they do rather a nice cream tea which might be a problem.................
