Thanks Geodark and almillar: appreciated. I'm coming to the same conclusion, though am reluctant to fork out for Chromecast. However, the cheaper alternatives I've seen which ostensibly guarantee miracast -- which Samsung claims the galaxy Tab A has, or a version of it, but seems not to have at all -- all have less than unanimously favourable user reports.
As to mirroring procedure, it's as easy as ABC and I'm a bit surprised YouTube is full of how-to-do-it.
Firestick set-up takes less than 30 seconds: home / settings / display / screen mirroring, at which point the TV screen reports that hybernia's firestick (aw, how cute) is ready to welcome visiting devices (er, yes.) Samsung Galaxy Tab A set-up is just as simple: settings / connections / screen mirroring. A chimpanzee could do it, or Donald Trump.
Mirroring takes place as long, and only as long, as the Samsung mirroring screen is active. So . . . don't do anything else. Just point it at the TV screen and wait. I've had the TV and Samsung screens virtually locked together for 5 minutes. Nothing. Have progressively stepped back to see if range alteration makes a difference, and waited, and waited. Nothing. Have tried with the tablet's wifi on and the tablet's wifi off. Nothing. With the tablet discoverable (though Samsung says that's not necessary) and the tablet non discoverable. Name a permutation, and I've done it.
In other words: the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1" does not work with the Amazon Firestick. Heigh ho . . .0 -
sorry I'm no help what-so ever but you sound just like me. I won't go on about technology rant just hope you get this sorted.
Nothing like technology to get you frustrated:mad:.Jane x0 -
4 years ago whenI wanted to use my Gen 2 Nexus 7 for photos onto screen via projector for my father of the bride speech, I bought (and still have) a Push2TV device that HDMI'd to our TV (and the projector) and happily mirrored the Nexus screen onto the TV or projector. Not sure what version of Android the Nexus is on as I haven't used the Push2TV since - but I remember that I was able to use it for my BT Sport account and stream without problem. If you're anywhere close to Ashford Kent you're welcome to try it!0

Thanks, again, to all who've been kind enough to take the time and trouble to contribute here. Thanks, now, for the latest posts:
saxoman: no apology needed! And yes, there is absolutely nothing like technology to get me ranting . . . especially when I'm led to believe I'm as dumb as my TV and as old fashioned as a Model T Ford. Fact is, all this, this. . . cool, new, exciting, bleeding edge tech stuff is too often new clothing for whatever Techno Emperor happens to be in current worship. To hell with the lot of 'em. They can stick their screen mirroring and I'll stick my HDMI in. I know which actually works.
Chrishazle: Chris, thanks for the invite -- much appreciated: Kent is infinitely preferable to Samsung UK Land! Time and distance conspire against though so I'll continue on with my old Asus tablet / old HDMI cable / old telly link for now -- though OH reminded me last night that we bought a new, er, bulb . . .
. . . for our Goblin Slide Projector . . .
. . . in 1977 . . .
. . . and really, shouldn't we be getting it (and the white screen from Boots The Chemist photographic department) out of the attic and using that???
Hmmm. Makes me remember, there was life before digital. Even if it was just so-oo un-cool . .:)0 -
Just point it at the TV screen and wait.
Well, first things first, you don't have to point it at the TV, it's over WiFi. The whole point is to be able to do it from your Sofa.
The tablet's WiFi should be ON.
So you're getting so far.
The Fire stick is ready and waiting. The tablet is looking - does it ever find anything or just keep searching? Give the screen a tap in some blank area if you need to keep it awake.
I wonder if we're actually talking about MiraCast on both devices or whether there are 2 different standards never finding each other.
Can you confirm the above hybernia and maybe have another go? A pic/screenshot of the TV and tablet would be useful too I guess...0 -

I dont think the miracast (widi) in the firestick is a full and true implementation. they no longer claim to be compatible with windows machines - only android, and I dont think it works with all android. I have multiple android devices and can connect with most of them (havent tried my new HTC U11 yet so can't comment on android 7) but I can't connect with any of my windows devices. This is the reason I ended up buying a dedicated miracast device.
Please not though that miracast is not a cheaper verison of chromecast - they do similar things, but they are not the same thing.0
