Mum and dad trying to work out their state pension

Hi all,
My mum and dad read an article in yesterday's Daily Mail.
In the last paragraph of the article, it stated that a woman, with a husband over 65, could claim 60% of the figure he recieves as a state pension. Is this correct?
My dad currently claims £760 pcm and my mum a mere £231 pcm in terms of state pensions. They also have private/work pensions, but that does not matter with regards to state entitlement?
Can my mum claim c.£470 (60% of my dad entitlement)?
If this is so can she back claim as my dad is 70 in January?
If you need any further figures or in, let me know. I'm doing this on my parents behalf but they will provide the figures.
Thanks
Mike

It is correct that if your mothers weekly basic state pension is less than 60% of your dads basic state pension then she can have her basic state pension topped up to that level.
What you need to do first is to determine whow much basic pension your mam and dad each get on a weekly basis - then check if your mums basic pension is less than 60% of that which your dad gets, if it is then you need to contact your the local pension centre to claim an increase.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
IIRC the rules say that she can claim 60% of his basic state pension and it appears she already gets that.An individual state pension consists of two bits - the basic pension ( 87 pounds a week) and the state second pension (formerly SERPS) an earnings related additional pension on top. The S2P can often double the size of the basic pension, as in this case.
If your father dies before your mother, her pension will be made up to the full basic state pension and she will inherit 100% or 50% of his S2P depending on their age.Trying to keep it simple...0
