Looking for views/advice on a laptop for uni for my nephew please.
For the older nephew 4 yrs ago I bought a Sony for £499. It was an excellent purchase.
I'm assuming I can spend less now 4 years later for a good spec and good brand.
It's needed for downloading TV programmes, iTunes, iCloud, emails, storing and editing photos, browsing for uni work, wordprocessing, playing x box. It will need USB ports and HDMI.
Would like a full HD screen.
Thanks.

For starters...

If its going to be carried a lot between Uni and home then one consideration could be the weight of any device.
A 15" lap top is often more than 2Kg and that might not worry some people but for others is could add a lot of weight to an already heavy backpack.
However, Smaller, lighter, ultrabook style often means more expense. You mention it needs HDMI so that could suggest your nephew wants to connect to a larger screen at home so 'on the road' a small screen should be no bother.
Hope this helps - I'm just about to look for a Uni lap top for my daughter so am in a similar boat.0 -
Some good points to consider thanks. He does want the larger screen as they like to play a few games - think the Sony is 17 inches. I'm after a laptop as we hasn't got the space for a desktop. He won't be regularly mobile with it as he's at home and so does most of his work there so the weight of it isn't as much of an issue as it might've been. I have a Lenovo desktop and am happy with it but was thinking more of better quality brands for the laptop. Any other suggestions/good specs out there. Thanks.0

He'd probably like this Dell Inspiron 15 7560 Gold But at £660, somewhat over budget.
Within budget is this Dell Inspiron 15 5558 at £293.94. You should fit an SSD, costing from £45 to £68.0 -
SSD examples.
Toshiba Solid State Drive Q300 120 GB £45.59 incl. VAT
Toshiba Solid State Drive Q300 240 GB £67.79 incl. VAT
Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive £84.95
Takes a few minutes to swap and will make all the difference.
You may be able to clean install Windows 10 Professional, as opposed to Home, to the SSD.0 -
Thanks for everyone's time. I'm not sure any of these are what I want. I don't want a Dell PC as I bought two and one has been constantly returned. Also I don't want to do any adding of SD or ram or anything else etc as I'm not well and haven't got the time or inclination anymore. I used to love tinkering with my PC and added ram etc but as he lives a considerable distance from me I just want him to have a lap top he can switch on when it's delivered. Any other suggestions ? Thanks though for your time.0

Depends on what game he is playing, I would recommend MSI above.
If full HD screen require, personally can't find anything decent under £580
He may not has a space for desktop, but will he has space for a desk and TV/ monitor?
There are not many choice for 17" and they are more expensive
Here is an example

You can hook the 15.6" to a TV/ monitor, and get a wireless keyboard and mouse. Job done.0
