Is Falmouth a good place for a holiday

We have just got back from a week in Torbay (staying in Paignton) and are now thinking about next year.

DW and i have never been to cornwall, so think we may go there. We are not surfer types, nor are we nightclub goers.

We do like a good walk, boat trips, Steam trains and the like.

Saw Falmouth and thought it may fit the bill.

Budget not overly important, as will hire a flat and self cater for the most part. Eating out maybe a third of the time.

just looking at options and would welcome your input.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

If you can find somewhere closer to Helford you would absolutely love it. The most beautiful pubs, walks and scenery that would stun you rotten. However, Falmouth isn't that far and not knowing what time of year you are wanting to go Helford (google Helford passage) may be easy for you to day trip to.

I live in Cornwall and whilst I would recommend almost all of it, Helford is beautiful beyond belief.

If you position yourselves somewhere mid-central you should be able to do both coasts and take in the rugged beauty of the north coast (amazing walks and some of the best food is on the north Cornish coastal areas) and the passive breathtaking scenery of the south coast.

thanks for your comments, we will be going in the Summer (August). We do like a beach within walking distance, they are great for "people watching". I will look up Helford.

  • I love Falmouth, it's got three beaches, lots of boat trips, lots of places to eat and a lovely town centre. It makes a great base.

If you've got a car then the aforementioned Helford is 45 mins away down the small roads.

I totally recommend Trebah Garden just outside Falmouth (Mawnan Smith). You can sometimes pick up vouchers for it. The ticket you are given inside is valid for a week, so you can revisit. It has a little shingle beach (it's really a tidal river) at the bottom. It's a timeless place.

The Lizard Peninsula is also about 45mins-1hr away - I love Cadgwith, Kennack Sands, Coverack, Lizard Point, Mullion Cove, Kynance Cove.

Longer days trips there's St Ives, Mousehole, Sennen, Porthleven (a foodie place).

Tbh if you like walking and eating then you're spoilt for choice!

Lived in Falmouth for seven years so would definitely recommend it.

If possible I would advise not going during the school holidays, everywhere gets much busier, accomodation prices go up etc...
I also find the weather in late May, June and early-mid September much nicer.

Falmouth has super food places and lots of good pubs. There are even more if you drive out of town. There are some indoor activities/museums if the weather is rubbish.

You can also get to Helford in <30mins, Lizard/Kynance cove etc.. not much longer. North coast is in easy reach and you can get to Penwith for day trips easily. There is also a trainline with half hourly service to Truro and then other stations.

There are some busy weekends so you might want to check out the website. Sea Shanty Festival & Falmouth Week being the biggest two. These weekends might draw you or put you off! (I'd recommend overlapping with sea shanty!)
