Customs charges from the USA

Hi all,
I purchased 2 pieces of comic art from a US auction site for just under £1000. The sender did not fully fill in the customs declaration and I have now received a letter from Parcelforce Customs Clearing Agents asking to provide information on the items.
Part of the daeclaration form asks if I ordered the items whilst on an overseas visit. I was in Florida at the time I ordered the the items. How would this affect things?
This form asks what other goods I bought whilst abroad, which consisted of some clothes, probably no more than $150 in value. Will I need to provide receipts? I don't think I kept any.
I understand that artwork is duty free and incurs a lower 5% VAT. Would ordering it whilst in the States change things for better or worse? Also, what evidence will I need to provide to prove I was in the States when I ordered the artwork?
Many thanks in advance,
Martin

I dont know if you being there would change things for better or worse but why not just tell the truth, if they want anything else from you they will let you know.
For the clothes how did you pay ? By card, the statememt might be a suitable alternative to receipts.0 -
I was wondering if they'd take into account allowances and deduct it from what would be taxable. But would it be worth the paperwork and searching for receipts, bank statements etc.0
