Visa debit - limit on payments to CC account?

Good Morning,

I have been trying to make payments to various CC companies using my Natwest Visa Debit card, and the majority of my payments have been declined.

I have phoned Natwest who tell me that although they have approved the payments, Visa themselves have a daily limit for payments to CC's - although the 2 Natwest agents I have spoken to tell me that they are unaware of the exact limit, they have both said that it is roughly £2000 within a 24 hour period and is cumulative.

This is a new one on me, has anyone else encountered this?

I guess it just seems strange to me because in the event of a fraudulent transaction it would surely be easy to track and recover a payment to a CC, whilst if the debit card was used to purchase tangible goods, then these could easily be converted into cash - but there doesn't seem to be any daily limit for payments/purchases other than payments to CC's.

Yeah I've had issues on occasion paying large sums of money on my Visa card even though it was only to NS&I, to the point where everytime I wanted to do it I had to phone up Santander to remove the red flag as it were. Funnily enough the £3k I just put in the NS&I 2.2% bond went through fine so I don't think the limit is £2k over 24hrs and if there is one your bank's limit will probably be much lower.

It's more likely that if you throw various amounts of money in the direction of credit card companies it looks like fraudulent activity so it's being flagged up as suspicious. I'd suggest using smaller amounts initially and see where your limit is.

It's a funny one - yesterday I made one successful payment of £1500 then everything else was declined. Today I made successful payments of £1500 and £499 and everything else was declined.

I do think the issue lies with Visa rather than Natwest as I receive confirmation of a successful transaction after inputting my one time pass code on the Natwest branded Verified by Visa screen, then another message to say the payment has been declined. Natwest tell me that they have approved the transaction with no fraud flagging, but that Visa have declined.

Why do you use a Debit Card to make a payment to (I presume) your Credit Card account?

Set up one or more Faster Payments on your current account and whenever you want to pay one of your cards, send a FP, without any interference from 'Verified by Visa'. (Don't forget the reference which is your card's 16-digits number.)

I will be doing this in the future, but have had problems getting a card reader from Natwest which I will need to set up new payments - in the meantime I just need to get some payments made ASAP and was trying to avoid going into branch or posting a cheque.

If you are not aware, you can use reader from any bank.
You can also borrow reader from someone else.

I have to say I've never heard of this debit card limit, and I can't really see why there would be one (although I'm nt doubting the evidence that it exists).

Unfortunately Natwest seem to work a bit differently to other banks in this respect. Your account must be "enabled" to use a card reader, and it cannot be enabled until you have ordered and received the card reader, so whilst i could borrow someone elses reader my account is not enabled to verify transactions in this way.
