Sewage Treatment Plant

We have a very old septic tank that is on its last legs, and now the leach field is collapsing and we are getting water/sewage pooling on the grass. I know it all needs to be replaced and the cost of this is beyond our means at the moment so, does anyone have any suggestions as to whether there are grants or very low cost loans to help us get a new STP or repaired septic tank, and prevent the kids and the dogs getting poisoned please?

You might be able to get a grant or low cost loan for the work from your local authority, but each one has its own rules / budget, so no one can give you specific advice.

If the situation is as bad as you describe, your first duty is not to allow your children or animals into the area of ground affected, then they won't be at immediate risk.

It depends on the exact circumstances, but you might also have a duty to warn neighbours, because the contaminated water could flow from your property onto someone else's, creating risks and nuisance for them too.

Your local Citizens' advice centre will probably be willing to help you in applying for assistance.

Whether you do it alone or with help, this is something you should act on quickly, because whatever the situation is now, if left un-addressed, it will be much worse when wetter weather arrives in the autumn .
