Have you tried the interrail system - rail travel throughout europe for 1 ticket?

Change your challenge! - get a cheap flight to northern spain and travel round - no probs - just had a week in the Picos cost much less than £100 a day including our flights - great acccommodation food and drinks!

What a great idea! You should blog about it!
I suppose i'd be shouted down (and rightly so in this day and age Daily Mail readers) for mentioning hitchhiking! I once got from Swansea to Amsterdam for the price of a cup of coffee, so that's 4 countries dealt with straight away!
I'm sure you could do it. Have a look here for European Coach Specials as well. http://www.eurolines.com/index.php?id=70 -
Thanks everyone - what a selection of good ideas

budgetflyer, topmum and horsenailbucket - brilliant! I'd looked at the map and wondered where was best to head for first - Germany here we come, it seems. Buses and rail sound good, cheaper travel sounds even better.
Bingobango, you're a star! :T Shall have to keep this in mind.
Traveller57 - I don't do flying - lots of reasons:A, most of them cowardice!:rotfl:
Sam Bee - I tried hitchhiking just the once .... I don't think that a couple of middle aged sensible looking travellers are going to be awfully successful:rotfl:On the other hand, I might just have a word with a haulage company ....
All suggestions duly noted and I shall, Sam Bee, take your idea of blogging about it seriously.
Now, next question, anyone know anything about travelling on transport ships? You know, 40 million fridges to Greece, that sort of thing. It might work out cheaper than rail, plus I could say we'd "cruised the Med" along the way to "Around the EU on 20 Altarian dollars a day" :rotfl:
Sorry for all the smilies - I'm just still very bouncy happy from the getting married/wedding [at MY age:eek:]If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!

Alas, freighter travel is generally as expensive per day as cruises (well the lower end cabins anyway) and takes more days. You could well pay £100 a day EACH.
Pity about the flying - I'm pretty sure it would be achievable if you did.0 -
I don't think my nerves would cope, dzug

I am looking around for ideas and grateful to you for saving me time on chasing after the mirage of freighter travel. Thank you. Still intending to give it a go, and I'll get where I get to - I promise to keep everyone informed - you never know, it just might be useful to someone else.If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!
