Why has nobody mentioned going on the sick for a week to try out the new job?
Sometimes my advice may not be great, but I'm not perfect and I do try my best. Please take this into account.

why would you do that! very dishonest, and the op was asking about resigning without speaking to the company not starting straight away?

I've been recruiting and interviewing recently. We go through a few agencies. I will always tell (and be told) to get it in writing from us before you do anything.
  • I have never ever received an unconditional job offer. I have always received one subject to references, and then nothing further. I have always resigned on receipt of the conditional offer and never heard anything about whether references have been taken up or not.

I have - but then I work for an LA and have for years.

I certainly wouldn't been resigning on the basis of a phone call - but then it really depends on the job and the industry, I suppose.

To be honest if anyone said to me "I am not resigning until you have received the references" I would think "What is he afraid that the references might say?"

But not on a phone call no - on a written offer subject to references.

That makes no sense - if I were afraid of what the references might say, surely I'd accept as soon as possible and hope that maybe - just maybe - references weren't followed up.

Other than that, I think we are arguing the same point.

It makes absolute sense. If I have confidence that the references will be good, I accept and resign. If I am not confident, I don't give up the job I have until they have been received. The path you suggest would leave somebody without a job.

We will have to agree to disagree.
