New job

Hi

I was offered a new job on Friday through a recruitment agency

They want me to hand my notice in on Monday but the only confirmation is from the recruitment agency

Would you hand your notice in?

No i would not. No way. Are you giving up a permanent job for an agency job?

PERSONALLY i wouldn't do that. I'd only hand in my notice if I got a permanent job through the company directly and had the offer in writing. PERSONALLY i would only deal with agencies if i was out of work.
  • Hi

It's a job from a business via the agency. Another full rime role

There is no way for me to get a job in my industry without using a recruitment agency

She read their email out to me over the phone

Only if speedy, dying to start date was involved or reference was needed as condition of offer. (These are my rockets)
And that would only be after receiving something in writing. Even an email.
While it's taken me a few years to f-i-n-a-l-l-y grasp every situation is unique, it's best to get some confirmation when you are in the far strongest position 9 times out of 10.

The last agency job I went for was interview on a Thursday, start on Tuesday - the agency spelt pretty much everything out in their interview confirmation that could probably, basically, pass as nothing further to know until they deliver the result.

Which makes me want to ask have you met this company? Are you unsure about the job?

I know someone who is having to decide between the job with an actual trial period during which they could find they are dismissed due to background screening to a straight out start job with quite a difference in salary and just a DBS check after being sought out. Fair to say they would rather be somewhere else right now! Nothing is ever simple is it!!
  • I had the interview with the company

As far as I'm aware the only checks they need are for my work references so can't see tjat being an issue
  • No. I would expect an unconditional job offer, in writing, before I resigned. This means references have been taken and are acceptable and all other checks completed.

A company can - and do - withdraw job offers.

In my experience if you get a permanent job through an agency, they agency calls you up and tells you if you were successful - as happened in your case.

Maybe you could ask the agency to forward the email they read out to you.

I don't really see it as more risky than handing in notice in response to a written offer from the new employer since, as others have said, offers can be withdrawn. So, of course, can notice.

And even if all goes well and you start the new job as planned you have no job security for the first two years, so the whole business of changing permanent jobs involves taking risks.

What's the worry about handing your notice in exactly?

It sounds as if you heard what you needed to during a telephone call with agent so you should know what needs happens next. (Although I also agree with other posters have advised in respect of what you need to receive)

The only time people start questioning handing their notice in is maybe then they are that unsure of the new job or really can't bear to leave the current one in my experience.

Perhaps your employer will accept notice day before you need to start new job for all the sense this thread makes! And to think people use to have their digs at me for posting 'nonsense'!
  • The worry is having no direct communication in writing with anybody and no direct communication at all from the company offering them the job. the agency is a recruitment agency; they have nothing to do with it apart from introducing the parties.

OP, I would never resign without a direct communication from the company in writing. Every job I have had in the last 20 years has come through these channels and every time it has been assumed that I will not resign until I get a letter or email from the company.

I have never ever received an unconditional job offer. I have always received one subject to references, and then nothing further. I have always resigned on receipt of the conditional offer and never heard anything about whether references have been taken up or not.

Can you contact someone at the company, just to make sure everything is OK ?
