Hi I'm hoping someone can help. We have just completed on our flat and it has storage heaters. We want to get new carpets in the next couple of weeks and I want to take out the old storage heaters with feet on the floor before we get new carpet. The only thing is I dont really want storage heaters. Can anyone give me an alternative. I have seen some online called Vantage economisers but no idea if this is what we need.

Flat is on 3rd floor and room are not huge so im thinking 90 - 110cm width ones???

Good on price
Look nice
Mount on wall no feet

Also, Im assuming electric is Economy 7 and would want this changing as we would not benefit from it.

Thank you:)

    Panel heaters

Be aware they use peak rate electricity, so it'll cost you a bomb.
Personally, I'd suggest you keep the storage heaters that user cheap rate electricity, typically as little as 30-50% the price of peak rate.

If you request a change from E7 to single rate meter, the supplier often charges you for such a meter change (typically £50-£70)
There are a very limited number of suppliers that may agree to supply you single rate electricity despite having an E7 meter, but your options will be severely limited.

Also, make sure that you won't benefit from E7.
I've seen some tariffs where even the peak rate on E7 is lower than the single rate changed. (maybe region dependent)
Of course, on E7 you get all electricity at the low rate for 7 hours per day. Why not make maximum use of it?
How, for example, do you plan to heat your water?

But if your mind is already made up, go for it,
though I'm not sure asking on what is essentially a moneysaving site, how to maximise your cost is the right forum

Will have a look at some more updated storage heaters. Maybe the ones that you can use instant heat for (not just stored heat. Really not sure what Im looking for. Didnt realise its that much cheaper to use :o Also we have yet to choose energy supplier. Not actually moving in for another week. Im assuming when we ring them today to say we have taken over flat that they will put us on standard rate as we dont want to sign up with anyone just yet. Will go on energy club to see what the best deals are.

    Thank you:)

STORAGE heaters - the clue is in their name ;)
They store heat (produced using cheap rate electricity) for use later.

If you want a heater that produces heat when you feel like it, they are called heaters.

Whichever type you go for, they use electricity at the time they produce the heat (as opposed to expelling it)
So if you produce the heat outside of the cheap rate period (or you get rid of E7 entrely), you'll be paying full whack for the electricity

Remember, all electrical heaters are 100% efficient. i.e. 1kW of electricity produces 1kW of heat. It's just a matter of how much you are willing to pay for that 1kW of electricity.

    Hi,

you will find wall mounted/panel heaters very expensive to use.

If annoyed about foot prints on carpet from heaters, (though will never be noticed), you could fit storage heaters first, then carpet over the feet, (still not be noticed).

Wall mounted/Panel heaters running cost will be nearly 3 times what storage heaters will cost you, per unit.

Have you had a look at Quantum? Look.

Initially you have no choice of energy supplier. You will be on a legally binding 'deemed contract' with the existing supplier to the flat. You need to ring them with your meter reading and set up an account. After the account is set up you are then free to instigate switching procedure to your chosen supplier.

If you are metered for water you need to give a reading to your supplier; although you cannot change supplier.

Personally I would keep your existing storage heaters and do some research into exactly what you want. Storage heating on an Economy 7 tariff will probably be the cheapest option and that will also heat hot water. You can consult other flat occupants in the building for their advice.

It is also possible that changing to panel heaters might involve extensive changes to the electrical wiring in the flat. This is because many storage heaters are on a separate circuit that is only 'live' during Economy 7 off-peak hours.

Haha thanks for explaining it in simple terms, it does make sense now. I swear this flat by has sent me gaga. I think we will have a look at getting some new ones.:)

Sorry started writing this and then had to get back to work!! Thanks very much for the info. I think we will stay with storage heaters. I will have a look at some more modern ones and see what I can find. This should be fun :-/
