Warranty

Ok bought an ex display laptop from a well known electrical retail outlet the other day, good discount and appears to be no problems that I can see, also as part of the deal I was led to believe that a full manufacturers warranty was included.
On registering he product with Microsoft for warranty purposes I noticed that the warranty end date was way shorter than a year, so contacted Microsoft to be informed that as ex display or demo as they call it they will not honour a year's warranty on the goods from date of purchase. They then informed me that as a demo it should never have been sold to me in the first place by the retailer, they then advised me to return to the retailer for exchange. I called the retailer and they advised that I would be covered under their own warranty, as this device has a sealed battery I asked if this was included in their cover and was assured yes it was. At the time of purchase and the fact that it was ex display no packaging came with the item, which in itself isn't a problem but if indeed it's covered in the warranty why did they try and sell me insurance before leaving the store if already covered ?
Should i return, I only have someone's word on the end of a phone regarding cover, obviously I have the receipt but is this enough to cover for warranty purposes as I have no other proof and i guess still plenty of time to return for a refund ?

    The manufacturer does not have to offer any guarantee. Responsibility for anything that goes wrong is the retailer's. If anything goes wrong with the laptop it is up to the retailer to sort it out under your statutory consumer protection.

    And that statutory protection is the Consumer Rights Act 2015. :)

    Ask them to send you an email confirming what was said.
