Annual booster costs (for dogs)

Booked my pal in for her annual booster and vet told me it would cost £70:eek:

To me it seems a tad high for a booster? I thought they were around the £30 mark? So just wondering how much other people have paid?

Also does anyone know the period of time that can lapse in between boosters before having to start the vaccinations from scratch again?

  • Yes that is a lot - it's about £30 in Lancashire. Vets4Pets have a vacc for life scheme for only a bit more than your vet is charging for one booster - might be worth looking into?

You're also free to ring around local practices to ask their price - prices are usually similar in the same area. To be honest I'd double check that price with the practice as it is so high; might be that they are packaging other things, e.g. worm and flea treatment, in with that price. They shouldn't charge extra for the check up with the vaccine, as the vet is supposed to check the dog is healthy and appropriate to be vaccinated.

As far as I remember from the data sheet for the vaccine my former practice used, the vaccine manufacturer only state that it is for 12 months. If you know which vaccine the practice use you can look it up yourself - Google Noah. Practices will have a vaccination protocol so you can ask them what if any leeway they advise. Ultimately if you go against their advice and have a booster vacc after a longer interval than the vet says is OK, it means the vaccine is off licence as it's not being given as per data sheet recommendations.

You can also have a blood test done to check which vaccines your dog's immune system needs. This is a more expensive option though.

I certainly wouldn't be paying £70 for one booster vaccination!

Which boosters is she having? If she's having the standard DHPPi plus Leptospirosis & Kennel cough then I suppose the last two could bump up the cost a little but it still seems expensive.

This has always confused me. There is no medical reason to start from scratch with an adult dog due to being late with a booster.
In fact Nobivac & Canigen DHPPi vaccines are licensed for 3 yearly booster intervals... it's only things like Lepto/kennel cough that require annual boosters.

It cost me around £30-£40 , my new vet says its not necessary to have a kennel couch vaccine unless muttly goes into kennels , so for the first time in 7 years he didnt have one last year.

I do not give KC vaccination despite one of the vets trying to persuade me.

The local kennels I use don't require it and have never had a case of KC.

I pay around £40 for the booster whether it is for full vaccination every third year or the reduced one the other two years.

If I ask about anything else at the same time I am not charged an extra consultation fee.

Vets4pets do a vacs4life plan. A one off cost of £99 and they get annual boosters for life. Lots of vets are now doing boosters every 3 years on dogs, not cats though.

The vaccination schedule will depend on what the vaccine maker recommend.

Nobivac's schedule is Distemper, parvovirus, and hepatitis are 3 yearly but lepto and parainfluenza are yearly.

Our previous vet [The pet vet] insisted he needed it every year , after being taken one too many times by them i changed and the new one says unless his holiday sitter insists on it [she doesnt] its unnecessary.

Our little fella had the Dhppi/L vaccine in June this year, at the grand total of £23. The vet also checked him throughly while we were there.

This was in Lancashire, sounds like it was a bargain!

Another one in Lancashire here, £24 at ours as well, but I know there is a cheaper one near us who only charge £18 ish-he is a good vet and cheap but has a huge waiting list lol.

For £70 I would expect worming pills and flea treat for the year as well lol

and generally speaking you can extend the annual booster to cover 13 rather than 12 months.
I expect to pay around £24 next week.
The KC is a further £24 and the kennels I use insist upon it. (In all other respects they are great, give the food I use at home at a reasonable rate- £15 for 2x 25kg dogs sharing.)
