Why is car insurance so ridiculously expensive!

  • The reason insurance is expensive for inexperienced drivers is not the risk of damage to the car you're driving, but the risk of life changing injuries to the people that you hit with your car and the insurer facing a claim that could result in a payout for a lifetime of care, which could potentially run into seven figures. So the standard whine of "my car is only worth £500 but insurance is £2,000" is hollow.

Get your licence, you don't have to get a car straight after, but it will be done and as others have said you will be accumulating "experience", as in time elapsed since your test, which will cause the premium to drop. You've made it to 29 without needing a licence, can you make it a couple more years without having a car?

that is no proof of experience though is it? I could have passed my test 5 years ago but never driven since, conversely I could have driven 60 000m per year since. Who's to know?

Yes, but it's the test that car rental companies use. it's the only thing that is verifiable.

Never? How do you work that out?

OP has been involved in 4 threads .. 2 of which the OP has only posted in once (including this thread), 1 has 3 posts and the other has 5 posts. (Which accounts for the OP's 10 posts thus far).

And remember - it's less than 24 hours since OP created this thread. Not everyone lives on the forum.
  • Thanks everyone for your replies/advice. I've tried a few different things and it's not really changed much. Looks like I'm just going to have to take the hit and hopefully it will come down in a few years.

  • If people would stop insisting on crashing into each other and into things the cost would come down.

Do your bit and don't crash and we will all benefit eventually.

It will - I remember being incensed by the cost of insurance when I first started driving (£2400 a year in 1996) - now I pay under £200 fully comp for one car (with business use) and under £150 for a classic (with agreed value).

In a few years you'll be able to wind up younger, less experienced drivers by telling them what good deals you get.
  • I'm 29 years old and I really want to drive, I've got my provisional, passed my theory test and had some lessons. I stopped my lessons because I got some example insurance quotes for after I'd passed my test.

I've tried small cars, large cars, big engines, small engines and the quotes all come back at over £2500 a year or a £4-500 deposit and £250+ a month. It's ridiculous, the only way I'd be able to afford that is if I lived in the car!

Is there anyway I can (substantially) bring the price down? Otherwise I'll never get on the road.

Not all small cars are equal (or big cars come to that), try:

You only have to drive on Britains roads to see why insurance is so expensive. The roads are awash with morons and seflish incompetent drivers. It all costs money. Modern cars dont take bumps easily and cost a lot to repair or are uneconomical to repair. The legal system quite rightly supports victims of the above morons in seeking restoration for damages and losses and more importantly, personal injury which could have significant effect upon them. Driving is a very dangerous and risky thing to do these days.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Rubbish. The roads are far safer today than they were in the past, and far safer now in this country than in most other countries. Just google some stats.

The main reason insurance is much more expensive for young people than in the past, or in other countries, is because this country is infested with ambulance chasing scum.
