Hanging basket plants for late August?

Hello greenfingered folks, my hanging baskets are looking a bit sad this time of year and so I was thinking of planting them again this weekend. Any suggestions what to put in them to last through autumn? Pansies etc. are the obvious choice but it might be nice to have something else before winter.

As you said trailing pansies try also Trailing winter viola, Viola ochre, Fillers could be mini cyclamen Ajuga Black Scallop, Helichrysum Icicles, Lamium and Salvia Tricolour.

Buy yourself some golden creeping jenny as a propagation main plant pot it now and take cuttings next spring, The cuttings should be routed enough by next august that when you do your autumn hanging baskets it will make a great trailer and are evergreen so when the winter viola and pansies finish the creeping jenny should have taken over the basket and last through into the last frost of spring. Then you can separate the creeping genny (before it flowers) and pot up the over growth and start again the year after. they have lovely yellow flowers on them. Some would consider them a weed, but I find they have their place in a garden or hanging basket.

also note that calibrachoa (aka Million Bells) are also effective and last till late autumn.
