DVD Recorders - help please?

We have a Sony DVD Recorder & I recorded a couple of the Rugby matches for my dad yesterday. When I went to play them on our Panasonic player, they won't play, but it does on the Panasonic one. I recorded one Live & one later from Sky+ which I had recorded earlier. This has happened before & I thought it was a fluke.
I formatted the DVD when asked etc, so I have done everything right (or maybe not).... What exactly does formatting the DVD mean?
I use Imation DVD-R 8x DVD's. Are DVD's recorded not meant to play on any machine or is this some copyright thing going on?
Can anyone please help me, as this defeats the whold DVD recording thing if it won't play on any other machine...
Thanks

As long as both machines can use DVD-R, then I believe you have to finalise the disc on one machine before playing it on another. This should be one of the menu options.
Formatting just means clearing everything off the disc and getting it ready for recording on.Charlie0 -
Does the recorder record to +r or -r ? One of my pc dvds wouldn't read +r discs from our dvd set top recorder -something to do with bitsetting, I think? I've never tried to record -r discs on our +r recorder. Two other things are that some players don't like rw discs and some players, mostly older one,s, don't like copies. A new one from asda 18 quid would probably play anything.0

I agree with the other posters. Would just like to add that, you only need to format RW (ReWritable) disks. If you are using DVD-R or DVD+R then these do not need to be formatted. They all must be FINALISED.

Thanks for the advise. Will try again - I am sure I finalised both DVD's.....Just don't like being beaten by machines....
Thanks again
