You should use exterior grade Cat5e/6 as it's not much more expensive and the standard stuff won't stand up to the elements over time.

    Thank you for that info.
after a break in a few years ago we had external cameras installed - they could do with an upgrade but I have now got Logitech circle cameras inside the house that I am very impressed with - the picture quality is excellent - you can pay for 30 day storage but we keep the free 24 hour storage.
We bought ours from amazon on offer for £75 and £99 each

Cheers for that. I will add that to my list of options.

I have still been looking at cctv options.
I was more leaning towards the PoE type.
The use of a Lan/Cat5/6 lead i think for my house is the better option.
I will have 1 camera at the rear of the house covering the back garden and 1 at the rear side corner towards the side/back door pointing to the driveway and the last camera on front covering the driveway and the garden upto the footpath.
One thing i have noticed is that the cameras have a lead from the camera that you connect the cable to that then goes to the dvd/nvr box. My cables will have to run from the outside walls to the front downstairs lounge and will i have to put weatherproof boxes to protect the cable connections as its not clear to me.
As for the cable will the cables have to be exterior grade or will the leads that come with kit be ok? Also i will need black leads as i don't want white/grey running all over the exterior walls like next door has after they got Sky multi in 4 rooms 2 years ago and looks a right mess.

Ours cables run through the soffits into the loft where the DVR is located (screwed down). What's to stop somebody cutting your external wiring running down the walls?

    I have thought of this.
My fasia/soffits are upvc and were overboarded before i got the house.
Also i don't have any power sockets in the loft and what is to stop the burglar stealing the dvr/nvr as i mentioned in my 1st post or smashing it up. I was on a forum site and they also mentioned that the dust/heat/cold would not be good for the unit but could put it a cctv case.
Another side note early this year a house was broken into and the burglar went into the loft after smahing the lock on the hatch and taking a large suitcase down and filling it with the stolen loot and walking down the street with it like they were going on holiday.
If i burglar wants to get in then they will but extra security will hamper this a bit.

We had power sockets put in the loft for the purpose of supplying power to the dvr.

As for the burglar smashing the dvr, he'd have to get into the house past curtain twitching neighbours at the front or through shuttered windows at the back and not be deafened by the alarm going off and then find the dvr....... There are much easier prospects in the area than ours.

We haven't experienced any problems with heat/cold and have put a plastic box with substantial holes drilled in to alleviate dust issues.

ETA, nothing is totally burglar proof - look at Buckingham Palace. You just have to make your place look a less easy option than your neighbours.
