Shared accomodation rate and DLA confusion?

After enquiring about LHA on the phone I was told I would get the shared accommodation rate. I am unable to work and am in the ESA support group and DLA both high rate components, which I told the man on the phone. However I have read on online that if you are on DLA middle or high rate care you get the 1 bedroom rate instead of shared rate? I am very confused about this, can someone please explain, Have I being advised wrong?

You need to be claiming the severe disability premium with your ESA to be eligible for the one bedroom rate if otherwise you would only be entitled to the shared accommodation rate.

So what are your living arrangements, your age and do you receive the SDP with your ESA?

  • Does someone elsewhere get Carer's Allowance for looking after you?
  • No I live at home with parents , so I dont claim the SDP premium, nobody gets CA for looking after me, im 24

This is what it says on the Shelter England website, and also says on the Entitledto website

Housing benefit if you have a disability

You can claim the 1-bed rate of local housing allowance (LHA) if you are in self-contained accommodation and get any of the following benefits:

daily living component of personal independence payment (PIP)
    attendance allowance
middle or high rate care component of disability living allowance (DLA)
    armed forces independence payment

This is why I am confused..

How are you claiming housing benefit if you live with your parents?
  • Im not claiming it, I am supposed to be moving out soon so I was asking before I move

OK, so when you move out you need to inform the DWP (ESA) that you have moved out and that you will be living on your own. Is that correct?

You should then ask them for the form to claim the severe disability premium with your ESA.

Once awarded you will then be eligible for the one bed rate.

The links you quoted are right in the sense that if you were in self contained accommodation then you would be receiving the SDP with your ESA. They just haven't said this !

Read the link I gave you.
  • Yes that is right, Thankyou I understand it now :-) I will read through the link
