references how do they work?

My biggest concern comes from leaving under stress,i had worked for this company for well over a decade always moving when help was needed never got into trouble or late etc etc.I got signed off twice and gave in my notice on the last note but with the company putting me down as leaving the end of that week not my intended notice period0

Will the new company be taking references before or after you start?
A recent job offer asked simply specifically for one personal and one character so putting two employers down won't be happening.0 -
I believe company's are going to my old employees before granting me an interview and saying i walked out (Untrue) but i need proof0

Normally they will ask you to provide a referee, the best person to choose is normally your line manager from your most recent employment.0

Industries differ, but I don't know of anywhere that takes up references before interview stage. What industry are you in and what kind of jobs are you looking for?0 -
In the last week, i have had little conversions regarding two jobs I have applied for (The hours etc) and then being told they'll contact me for a face to face interview within the next few hours. That never happens so I believe my old company are either refusing a reference or telling lies but how can i prove this?0

With difficulty I'm afraid.
You could make a Subject Access Request to the firms where you have applied. In theory that should yield any references they have received. However unless you know a document exists you have no idea whether they have sent you everything. Even if they have you are unlikely to get notes of an off the record conversation!
Your old firm are (in all but a very few situations) fully entitled to refuse to provide a reference. Sadly that is usually interpreted as having nothing good to say but is totally non actionable.0 -
I wish companies would freely give feedback on the reasons they've turned you down. its messing with my head thinking I'm getting turned down for a role i was good at with a clean record (12+) just because i gave in under the stress being created.
I don't know where to turn for advice anymore regarding my next steps0 -

It's very unlikely they are approaching your previous employer in that time period unless it is a particularly sensitive job. What kind of jobs are these?0 -
These aren't agency jobs are they?
Honestly, not long caught sight of another offer letter today which reads:
This offer is subject to
A) Providing originals of ID requested
Completing DBS check in a timely manner which comes back satisfactory.
Literally. No mention of references.
Are you going for jobs in the immediate area as this previous employer - it may be worth trying as you could get in with a company/employer who just well can't stand you're last? They do exist to the point I turned up grinning in much admiration about one company when it could have been toned down, this wasn't even direct rivals neither! Was quite an eye opener reading someone's LinkedIn profile in the hiring loop (though I seriously didn't think to do this until afters!!). A few ties definately popped up alright.0
