Few questions regarding HSBC

Hello

I have had a bank account (and credit card) with HSBC for about 2 years now - I've never used the bank account as it was always there as a back up to my Halifax. Due to Halifax changing their overdraft structure I am looking to start using my HSBC account.

I called up and requested a new card (for bank account and CC) and asked if the debit card was contactless, to which she replied she will need to do some 'pre-checks' - she the came back and said I cannot have one. Maybe this was because I haven't used the account but seems kinda odd as I have contactless on a number of cards and I didn't think there was a risk to banks as I thought contactless was also checked (Electronically) at the time of purchase. Anyway I said I wanted to make a complaint and she called me back 5 mins later to advise her manager can authorise the contactless card, IF I didn't complain, however if I still wanted to complain I wouldn't get the contactless card. Considering the complaint was about not getting the card I said I was happy. I have read there are different type of contactless cards, online contactless and offline contactless - does anyone know which ones HSBC issue?

Funny thing is the CC came today and its contactless :rotfl:

The next question I have for people that bank with HSBC is this. On Monday I made a £5 payment to my other external account. It went through within minutes. Yesterday I made another small payment (£10) to the same account and it took almost two hours to go into my account. I know they state it can take up to two hours but I've never seen it take this long before. Also, during the wait I decided to send myself another £10 thinking the original got caught up somewhere and needed the money urgently and didn't have card to withdraw from HSBC. Anyway it kept saying that it couldn't send it today - it implied one transfer per account per day? Is that right? But to make things even more weird the I tried the second transaction twice, the second time it seemed to send but didn't debit or credit my account. The today it just appeared,

Anyone got any idea?

Thanks

I can transfer multiple times a day to the same account and it goes through instantly, thousands £ at a time.

I suspect this is because I regularly do it, whereas this is new to your account and may be flagging up something internally.

I also never have a problem with the contactless until the card breaks and they send me another. My card never reaches its expiry date before it breaks.

    Are they instant normally?

The transfer to other accounts? Yes.

Also be aware that HSBC do not show contactless payments in "pending transactions", unlike Lloyds.

Strange as my Halifax doesn't show contactless payments as pending, yet they are part of the same group as Lloyds.

My partner who banks with NatWest has had her contactless payments start showing up as pending when they didn't previous to that

In regards to your first question, I'm a little unsure about which contactless cards HSBC issue although I did have a similar issue with Lloyds Bank around 2/3 years ago where they didn't issue me a contactless card until I had to ask for one, and then when I lost that around a year later, they sent me a non-contactless one again. I no longer bank with them but my point is that it must be perhaps an income issue.

With transfers, I don't know what is wrong or right, but usually if I transfer from my First Direct to Halifax, or visa-versa, it's there instantly. Although I noticed when I opened a Metro Bank account a few months ago, those transfers would take around a day to go through. Payments went in straight away, but payments out took a while

Contactless payments aren't always shown in pending payments. If they're not authorised at point of sale the bank hasn't a clue the transaction has happened! They often appear the next day.
