Remove rubbish from a garden

Hey folks
Can anybody help me with any ideas? I've moved into a new house. Garden was badly over grown with weeds. So I cut them all down and moved the garden. Problem is that the garden and soil seems to be filled with lots and lots of rubbish. Like small bits of broken plastic plate and seemingly stuffing from a mattress and lots and lots of other stuff. It's some size of garden as well and unfortunately I have a bad back so wondering is there any quick and cheapish way of getting rid of it all. Apparently for it to be dug up and removed and new top soil put down is big money. Artificial grass would be expensive too. I'm really not relishing the idea of having to get down on my hands and knees and move inch by inch digging up all the rubbish.
Any ideas greatly appreciated
Thanks
Chris

You have to pick it up!!! Don't dig as anything under the surface can stay there if you're not fussy.
Then just now the weeds every couple of weeks! How nice do you want it to look? Got a picture?0 -
It's not skilled work to dig soil and sieve it into a wheelbarrow. I should know, as that's what I've been doing for a while now, creating several tonnes of good top soil and plenty of hardcore for the paths in the process.
So, you should be able to get someone for a labouring rate to start the work, see how it goes, and then evaluate what the whole lot will cost you.
Alternatively, you could do the work over time yourself, if your back will take short bouts of exercise. I know something about backs too and, frankly, sitting on one's bum and 'resting' it is probably the worst thing that anyone can do in the majority of cases.
We can't see how much garden you have or know exactly what might be buried there. In our garden we inherited three or four skips worth of waste material, but that was an extreme case! You may just need to get the top surface into reasonable shape and sow grass seed. Then, all you would have to do is mow, until you are ready to cut out bits to turn into plant/veg beds, as you feel able.0 -
If you don't have your own, borrow some kids! Provide gardening gloves, drinks and snacks and an incentive to fill a bucket with rubbish.0
