It really annoys me how the government does not encourage people to get permanent health insurance (also known as income protection) to cover themselves in situations like this.

So many people don't realise until it is too late that the State does not help people who have a mortgage. Most people (like the OP) just assume that they will get help with their bills, but this only happens if you rent your home.

Permanent health insurance is very expensive at the moment but if everyone was encouraged to get it then the premiums would come down.

My husband was in a similar situation to the OP but he had permanent health insurance from his work which paid 75% of his salary until he was able to work again.

It breaks my heart when people who have worked all their life suddenly find they can't work and only then realise that the state will not help them.

I think Martin Lewis should focus on this an lobby the government to do something about it as it affects the people who do the right thing and work hard.

We did not speak to them in the end we thought we would see it out until the end of the month and see how we stood we should be ok now if we stay thrifty.
Thanks again for all advice given.

    Kind Regards Chris

    That's not really true.
Yes, you can only claim housing benefit if you are in rented accomodation, but benefits such as PIP, ESA, Carers Allowance, Tax credits and Child tax credits are available to both renters and home owners.

And there is the possibility of SMI to help pay for your mortgage if if you have a passporting benefit such as income related ESA or JSA, although this will change to a loan from next year

But what and when (and if anything) they will pay towards your mortgage is very limited.

Most people will end up losing their home if they don't have income protection.

Unfortunately, people do not realise this until it is too late because no-one tells them. I have seen lots of threads on various MSE forums where people have asked how they are supposed to pay their mortgage.

Unless you have a very small mortgage you will not be able to stay in your home.
