DO NOT GIVE NOTICE to BG. You are on a fixed term contract. Under the terms of its Supply Licence, BG is required to give you written notice in the period 49 to 42 days before contract end that your contract is coming to an end. You are then free to initiate a switch to a new supplier WITHOUT penalty. Your contract end date should be on your latest statement.

The gaining supplier manages all aspects of a switch. You do not have to inform BG of your transfer of supply. The gaining supplier will ask you for meter readings at the appropriate time. These will be verified and passed back to the gaining and losing suppliers to open and close your accounts. BG has 6 weeks from the date of transfer to raise a Final Bill.

I repeat there is no need to contact BG if you are switching to another supplier.

  • I am also on mse collective tariff 3rd Oct 2017. I am sure you you can swap 50 days before it ends. I am wondering if mse are doing another collective tariff after this one ends. It's been a great deal.

The days of 'good value' collective switches are pretty well dead. Smaller (cheaper) suppliers do not want to pay referral fees to third parties following the CMA/Ofgem's relaxation of tariff rules. Collective deals run by MSE and others have not been the cheapest deals on the market. My advice is to do a full market comparison.

Good morning, nice to see you back for the summer :hello:
This is a great time of year, don't you think?
    About your tariff
Collective Fix Oct 2017 prices are fixed until 3rd October 2017. You’ll pay a daily standing charge and unit rate.

At the end of the tariff
Before this tariff ends, we’ll write to tell you what will happen next. If we don’t hear from you, we’ll move you to the cheapest variable price tariff (no end date) we have available from 4th October 2017.

    If you decide to cancel
    ...
If you switch to another energy supplier before 15th August 2017 we’ll
charge you an exit fee of £20 for electricity and £20 for gas. We’ll collect exit fees before any other amounts you owe us, either from payments you make or from your credit balance.
    Ain't Google wonderful?

    No mention of giving notice

If you wish to switch supplier, you can do so at any time. Simpley contact the supplier(s) of your choice and they will arrange everything for you. No need to contact Briish Gas at all.

Wow, over 2 years away for you.

Welcome back - it's a wonderful summer this year :)
  • We too are on the BG Collective fix expiring 3rd October. I'm trying to understand how our actual consumption stacks up against our original estimates so I can get the most accurate price comparisons as we are now within the 50 day window.

I was expecting to see a quarterly statement around July 26th. And indeed on the 21st July we had an email requesting readings, which I promptly submitted. But apparently they did not generate the quarterly bill/statement even though I have an email thanking me for submitting the readings. Nor do the readings appear on the meter reading or energy usage histories in "My account".

    What's going on?

They are pants! I've been with them on 2 collective fixes since Feb 2016 and in that time they have issued bills in May 2016, Aug 2016 and Feb 2017 (and I had to complain to get the Feb 2017 bill generated!). I have submitted meter readings via the app on the 1st and 15th of every month since I joined them. I also sent meter readings when they sent the emails every quarter asking for a read for a bill!

So today I signed up to switch to the EDF Online Saver Sep-18 as its only about £40 more expensive for me than the BG Oct-17 fix was. Bye Bye BG!
  • I have had the MSE collective switches for a while and they have been good for me. I pay by monthly direct debit and give my meter readings every month, I get a reminder from BG. I have had no trouble. I hope I can get another one with MSE. I have been with British Gas for a long time, but will switch if I get a better deal, but who do you trust? ;)
