Return of damaged goods - their time limit.

I ordered an item nearly 3 months ago. It had a value of almost £1,000.
Delivery was arranged for 4 days later requiring me to be at home to accept delivery sometime between 8am & 6pm.
It didn't arrive.
New delivery dates were arranged and failed and, as a result, I had to stay in all day for the next 6 working days.
The item was eventually delivered - damaged.
A replacement and collection was arranged for a few days later but, of all 5 dates given requiring me to wait in all day, the replacement didn't actually arrive until 3 weeks later.
This gives a total of 11 wasted days waiting in.
Eventually the item arrived but the driver did not have the required authorisation to take the damaged item away.
Since the first date given for the collection I have now been storing the damaged item for over 2 months.
It is large item, I live in a 2 bedroom flat and the storage of it is a great inconvenience.
I have constantly asked the company to collect it but they will only 'apologise for my inconvenience' and tell me that they are 'trying to make arrangements for it's collection.
Question: How long do I have to keep this item before I can legally dispose of it myself?

I'd check with Citizens Advice Bureax re the legality of disposing of it.

Regarding the waiting in someone pointed this article out to me. Have a read of MSE's Failed Delivery article. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/delivery-rights?_ga=2.79193436.938855995.1496349427-1431913062.1383469649

Every time I've known this happen to people, there's never an arrangement made to collect.

My faulty tap - never arranged. Friends' bath with the tap holes in the wrong place - now in my bathroom :o. Sister In Law's new but damaged oven (posh brand) - went on eBay.

If you're the only one chasing, I doubt they'll be collecting it. If you like, you can write to them and give them (eg.) 14 days before you dispose of it. I think that's perfectly fair.
