Re-fixing door handle on hollow door

A tenant managed to rip the door handle off a wardrobe door. I've tried fixing it back on with screws but the door is made of thin wood and is hollow so it just comes out after a bit.

Any ideas?

Put a slab of wood in the hollow, where the handle needs to go. I think that's how room doors are made.

Thanks but I can't get inside the door. At the moment is just several holes that have splintered so I can't see how I can put anything thicker than the screws on the inside of the door to prevent the handle coming off.
  • Try stuffing the hole tightly with some matchsticks then screw it back in.

Same has happened to a door in my place, so this thread helps me too.

But, the reason for the damage is that the closure mechanism is too tight. Pulling the door open requires too much force.

The door itself fits ok so is it possible to take the plate thingummy off the door frame and dig the wood/mdf out so that when replaced the plate can sit deeper into the frame and the fit with the snub on the actual door is looser? And if so what sort of tool do I use? I have a Stanley knife and not much else in the way of tools.

That has worked for me in the past too. Plus a bit of pva glue, leave to set before screwing in again.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

How about : some expanding foam to roughly seal the area in the hollow, then cut away some of the foam inside the hollow, and use some P38 car filler.

I've managed by drilling out slightly and pushing in a wall plug before.
